Police are warning residents to be on the alert of a compensation scam where they could be contacted by someone purporting to be a bank official or from an official organisation claiming they are entitled to compensation or a refund.
The warning was issued by Nottinghamshire police after one man was persuaded to hand over hundreds of pounds as an administration fee to suspected fraudsters after being told he was entitled to £3,000 in compensation for having been miss-sold payment protection insurance (PPI).
Protect yourself from compensation scams
This is a form of advance fee fraud where fraudsters target advance payment for financial gains that do not materialise. Genuine organisations will never cold call you or contact you to ask for personal information, or ask for a payment in advance. If in doubt, contact the organisation directly before taking any action.
